"Our Energy, Our Future,"  A Dialogue with You

>>
Over the past several months, you have likely seen articles and heard utility experts verbalize a harsh reality; America will exhaust the existing surplus of electric generating capacity in less than 10 years, and the cost to replace that surplus is going to be enormous. Tri-County, and cooperatives all across the country, are asking you, the member-consumer, to demand answers from elected officials as to what can be done to mitigate the supply and cost issues.

I suggested to you in an earlier article that we have added a new "fuel" to the more traditional nuclear, coal, gas and renewable sources, and that is energy efficiency. I borrowed the term "the Fifth Fuel" to describe energy efficiency. I recently heard someone suggest that efficiency should be the first fuel, and not the "fifth." If you think about it, that suggestion is absolutely correct.

The least expensive generation we can provide is that capacity we do not have to build. Conservation and efficiency cost very little, can be implemented immediately, and we can all contribute. All we have to do is reduce the amount of kilowatts we consume during peak hours. That’s pretty simple, right? Then accept my challenge. Find ways to reduce your monthly kilowatt usage by 10%, or more if possible. Use compact fluorescent lamps, raise your thermostat, lower the setting on your water heater, and participate in Tri-County’s No Sweat air-conditioning program. If we all are willing to modify our habits, we can make a difference.

But do not become complacent in thinking that efficiency and conservation will solve the supply and cost problems without any further action. We must build for our future needs using all fuels and technologies available. The "silver buckshot" approach is the best solution. Becoming more energy conscious simply buys time to get new technologies and the more conventional generation sources on the ground and producing.

What are you willing to do? Will you join with me and accept my energy challenge. <<
