Conference Makes its Mark on Avant

>> Jones County High School Sophomore Dylan Avant spent five days in July at the FFA/FCCLA Center in Covington learning about cooperatives and building his leadership skills at the Cooperative Youth Leadership Conference. The Tri-County EMC sponsored student joined 39 of his peers experiencing what it’s like to make real-world co-operative business decisions through games and exercises.

The Congressional Insight Workshop presented by the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association educated students on the skills needed to become an effective member of Congress. While serving their "two-year term," students juggled the demands placed on elected officials including managing staff, responding to the media, monitoring legislation and attending meetings.

Students heard from representatives of Dairy Farmers of America, Farm Credit Banks, Georgia EMC, REI and more. Gov. Sonny Purdue also made a special appearance.

Other activities included miniature golf, swimming and a new APEX Challenge Course featuring a 40-foot rock climbing wall, a 300-foot zip line and other aerial obstacles. "I never knew what co-ops were about until this conference," says Dylan. "It was so easy to make friends. I’d like to go back."  <<
