Youth Opportunities for 2008
Are your kids in high school or college? If so, they could be eligible for one of these opportunties. Tri-County is accepting applications for three scholarships (Tri-County EMC Cooperative Scholarship, Operation Roundup Foundation Scholarship and the Walter Harrison Scholarship), the Washington Youth Tour and the Cooperative Youth Conference. To qualify, applicants must reside in the household (primary residence) of a Tri-County EMC member.
Scholarships
The Tri-County EMC Cooperative Scholarship is offered to undergraduate students whose main residence is served by Tri-County EMC. Three, $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to applicants based on their academics, financial need and community involvement. The scholarship can be used at any accredited school in the U.S. Applications are due April 15.
The Tri-County EMC Operation Roundup Foundation Scholarship is available to undergraduate and graduate students with preference given to nontraditional students. These Operation Roundup funds totaling $4,000 are awarded to students in the spring and fall of each year. Applicants are scored on academics, financial need and a demonstrated commitment to their community. The deadline is April 15.
The Walter Harrison Scholarship is comprised of several $1,000 scholarships offered through EMCs across the state. Tri-County EMC will select one undergraduate semi-finalist to compete for a $1,000 scholarship at the state level. A combination of need and academic ability will be used to determine winners. The scholarship must be used in Georgia. Tri-County EMC must receive applications by Feb. 13. The award honors the late Walter Harrison, a pioneer in the rural electrification movement.
Washington Youth Tour
The Washington Youth Tour is offered to high school students of at least 16 years of age whose home is served by Tri-County. The chosen delegate will join about 100 Georgia students on a fast-paced, high-energy trip to Washington, D.C. to learn about democracy, history, leadership and public service. They will also meet their congressmen and senators. The application deadline is Feb 15. Visit http://www.youthtour.coop/ to view a video about the tour.
The Cooperative Youth Leadership Conference
The Cooperative Youth Leadership Conference is a three-day event held in July at the FFA Camp in Covington. Through teambuilding exercises, personality assessments and more, participants take an in-depth look at co-ops while developing leadership skills. Activities include horseback riding, canoeing and swimming. (39863-01)
