Conserve Water and Electricity

In response to Georgia’s drought, we offer some measures that you can take to conserve water, and, in some cases, save on your electric bill.

Toilets manufactured after 1992 use 1.6 gallons or less per flush. A family of four can save 14,000 to 25,000 gallons of water per year by upgrading.

* Consider replacing an older clothes washer with an Energy Star-rated model. On average, new Energy Star models use 50 percent less energy and 40 percent less water than conventional washers. Opt for front load washing machines versus top load models. They use less water and energy and have higher spin speeds to dry clothes faster than their top-load counterparts.

*
Fully load automatic dishwashers. They use the same amount of water no matter how much is in them.

* Retrofit wasteful household faucets by installing aerators with flow restrictors. If you replace your showerhead with an ultra low-flow version, you can save up to 2.5 gallons per minute.

*  Check for toilet leaks by adding food coloring to the tank. If the toilet is leaking, color will appear in the bowl within 30 minutes.
