New Members Added to Green Power EMC

Georgia’s first renewable energy program, Green Power EMC, has added two new members, Rayle and Upson EMCs bringing the total participating EMCs, including Tri-County, to 31. Headquartered in Washington and Thomaston respectively, Rayle and Upson EMCs bring another 21,000 consumers to Green Power EMC which now offers green energy to a total of 1.5 million households.

Created in 2001, Green Power EMC began as a partnership of 17 Georgia cooperatives to contract for electricity generated by renewable resources. To date, Green Power EMC has generated more than 90 million kilowatt hours of electricity from current projects including two landfill gas-to-electricity projects and a low impact hydroelectric project.  (1914-01)

Earlier this year, Green Power EMC announced plans to add to the mix with the purchase of 20 megawatts of electricity from the first poultry litter-to-energy operation in Georgia. The Franklin County plant will be the first in the state to use a gasification to convert poultry litter into electricity. Wind generation is also under consideration as a viable green energy source by Green Power EMC pending review of a year-long study. If approved, the wind project could begin generating electricity in 2008.
