Local Kids' Summer Activities Included Electric Safety
>> Students may have taken a break from school this summer, but for some local youngsters, Tri-County EMC's High Voltage Safety Demonstration provided a quick and exciting study into the world of electricity. Chuck Monnette, manager of Safety and Training and Mark Paulish, engineering co-op student conducted electrical safety demonstrations in June with Baldwin County's Cub Scout Pack 318 and Jasper County's Farm Day Campers.
Cub Scout Pack 318 visited Tri-County's office in Gray to view the safety presentation. "One of the things you"ll learn as a Boy Scout is to always be aware of your surroundings," stated Mark Paulish. "So, you need to know that electricity can be dangerous." During Jasper County Farm Safety Day Camp, 30 children spent all day learning about farm-related safety topics. One of the examples that Tri-County demonstrated was a toy figure making contact with 7,200 volts of electricity.
The Tri-County team identified various scenarios that the kids may encounter such as flying kites or trying to get lodged food out of a toaster. They instructed the children to avoid flying kites near power lines and to never attempt to remove any object from a toaster with a metal knife or other device. (6245-01)
"The start of the new school year is a prime time for educators to look at incorporating a high voltage safety demonstration into their studies mix," says Margaret Morris, communications specialist. "Each session is designed to capture attention and illustrate the tremendous force of electricity."
